The quality and performance of bricks depend heavily on the chemical composition of the raw materials used. Here's a breakdown of key chemical components and their effects on brick making:

1.  Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂)
Ideal Content: 55% – 70%
Function: Main structural component in brick materials.
Effect: Provides strength and hardness. Too much reduces plasticity, making molding harder. Can cause expansion during firing, weakening the brick.

2. Aluminum Oxide (Al₂O₃)
Ideal Content: 10% – 25%
Function: Improves plasticity and bonding.
Effect: Too little results in low strength. Too much increases firing temperature and fuel use, leading to pale bricks.

3. Iron Oxide (Fe₂O₃)
Ideal Content: 3% – 10%
Function: Adds color and acts as a flux.
Effect: Gives a reddish color. Too much reduces the brick’s ability to withstand high heat, causing deformation.

4. Calcium Oxide (CaO)
Ideal Content: Less than 5%
Function: Found in limestone; considered an impurity.
Effect: Makes firing harder, causing cracking. Large particles can lead to lime bursting, weakening the brick.

5. Magnesium Oxide (MgO)
Ideal Content: Less than 3%
Function: An impurity.
Effect: Causes white salt deposits (efflorescence) and can lead to peeling or weathering.

6. Sulfur Trioxide (SO₃)
Ideal Content: Preferably 0%, should not exceed 1%
Function: A harmful impurity from industrial by-products.
Effect: Causes expansion and cracking during firing, leading to structural failure.
